This guide covers inventory cleanup, with information to help you organize your in-game inventory.

MapleStory has quite a few features and items related to inventory management, which can be confusing when you first encounter them. With new players in mind, I have gathered the relevant information here, starting with the basics, so you can read through it in one place.

Expanding Your Inventory Slots

When you create a character in MapleStory, you start with 48 inventory slots by default. The Equip/Use/Setup/Etc. categories each have a maximum of 128 slots, while the Cash category has a maximum of 256 slots and starts with all 256 available.

Inventory Slot Expansion Coupons are available from the Cash Shop, but these days, practically no one needs to buy them there.

If you are a new player starting during the winter or summer season, the first reward from a leveling support event provides Selective Slot Expansion Coupons, which expand an inventory category to its maximum capacity. You receive 4 coupons, allowing you to expand all 4 categories to 128 slots. Using these on your main character covers your immediate storage needs, so you can take your time expanding the inventories of your other characters.

For alternate characters, creating a Tera Burning character in Challengers World gives you access to the benefits shown above.

The item shown above is also regularly available through Daily Gift rewards on days 6/16/20/22. As a new player, however, you will naturally need Character Slot Expansion Coupons more than extra inventory space for alternate characters, so choose your rewards according to your priorities.

Recently, the summer and winter showcases have also consistently provided 4 Max Slot Expansion Coupons as gifts, which are a considerable help when leveling alternate characters. You can split your showcase gifts between characters, allowing you to expand whichever inventory categories need the space first.

Sorting, Pinning, and Locking Items in Your Inventory

The sorting, pinning, and locking features are available at the top of your inventory, and each does what its name suggests.

Pinned items have a vertical mark at the bottom of their icons, while locked items display a padlock icon. Use these features as needed; locking expensive items and equipment you are currently wearing is a particularly useful precaution against accidental loss.

[Bags]: Essential Items for a Tidy Inventory

Bags for the Use, Etc., and Setup inventories are essential for keeping items organized, so you should obtain each type. You can open a bag directly from your inventory or click Bags in the menu to view them all together in the interface shown above.

These bags can generally be crafted, so they are available to buy from Maple Auction as well as from event coin shops.

At the time of writing, the cheapest coin bag in regular worlds costs 1 million mesos, most other bags cost several million to 10 million mesos, and the more expensive coin and recipe bags cost around 30 million mesos. Given how valuable event coins are to new players, spending them on these bags should not be a priority.

The 80-slot chair and title bags cannot be purchased from the Auction House and are available only through the selection coupon in the event shop shown above. These are not urgent purchases either, so you can leave them until later.

The largest soul bag has 40 slots.

Soul Shards used to be stored in your inventory and soul bags, but the Soul Collector revamp moved them into that interface, leaving soul bags with only completed souls to hold. Although their role is now more limited, these bags are inexpensive and you will eventually need one, so it is worth buying one from the Auction House to keep on hand.

The largest scroll bag also has 40 slots and can be purchased from the Auction House for around 10 million mesos, so there is no need to spend event coins on one. Scroll bags hold all types of scrolls and Rebirth Flame items.

The largest recipe bag also has 40 slots and can hold every type of recipe. Without one, recipes can easily clutter your Use inventory, making this one of the higher-priority bags to obtain.

The largest herb and mineral bags have 20 slots and, as their names suggest, hold herbs and minerals. At present, they are not particularly necessary unless you mine or gather herbs in Ardentmill. The materials shown above are ones I collected when field gathering was still available, but if you do mine or gather herbs, these bags are essential.

The largest production bag also has 20 slots. It holds various crafting materials, including Unrelenting Flames, which are used to craft Rebirth Flames, and Item Crystals. These materials naturally accumulate as you play, so having a bag for them helps keep your inventory tidy.

The largest coin bag also has 20 slots and holds various coin items. Although there are relatively few types of coins at present, a dedicated bag is still useful.

Chair and title bags are the only bags available with 80 slots, and those versions can only be obtained from event coin shops. Since events regularly award chairs and titles, you will eventually need these bags even if you do not need them now. They are not a priority for new players, however, so use 40-slot bags for the time being and replace them later.

If your inventory is already too cluttered, you can move chairs to another character through storage: all chairs except custom chairs can be transferred within the same world.

Item Extraction and Superior Item Crystals

When your Equip inventory fills up, you can sell the equipment directly or extract it to obtain Superior Item Crystals, then sell those instead.

Superior Item Crystals are used to craft the buff consumable 마법의 숫돌 and currently sell for 250,000–400,000 mesos each, depending on the world. The yield depends on the equipment's level, but extracting a nearly full Equip inventory produces around 80–100 crystals.

If your Alchemy level is 6 or higher, you can extract items through the Extract/Fuse menu in your inventory. Alternatively, you can use an extractor placed by another player in Ardentmill on channel 1.

Always check the filters and adjust them appropriately before starting extraction.

The Item Ignore Skill for Pets

The Item Ignore skill, available from the Cash Shop, is another important tool for keeping your inventory tidy. You can pay for it entirely with Reward Points, and a single purchase applies to all 3 pets, so I recommend buying one.

After applying the skill, you can configure it using the item exclusion settings button at the bottom of the pet options.

Each pet has 30 entries for excluded item names, giving you 90 in total. You can register most items, and there is even an option to stop your pets from picking up mesos, although you are unlikely to need it.

Once you register an item's name, your pets will no longer pick it up, so it will only enter your inventory if you collect it yourself. This makes inventory management considerably easier.

These 3 items become much less useful as your character grows stronger, but they have long been common exclusions. Back when there were far fewer bosses—and, more recently, before the limit of 12 weekly bosses was introduced—they were almost essential additions to the list. Other items are still worth excluding today, so I have listed some common examples below for you to register according to your needs.

As mentioned above, equipment can be extracted, so keep that in mind when deciding whether to exclude it.

As in the Auction House, entering part of an item's name brings up a list of matching items. You can use this to make registering exclusions easier.

For example, 무서워요 퀸 appears in the list even if you enter only “서워”.

• Cygnus Circlet/Cygnus's Kohinoor Recipe: Cygnus reward items

• Dark Tachion: A Papulatus reward item

• Dominator Pendant Recipe/Twisted Time: Be careful not to exclude the actual Dominator Pendant when registering these

• 홍화청매도 Recipe

• Lucky item recipes: Enter part of the name, such as “럭키아,” and register all the matching items

• Recipes: The Deimos Sage Shield Recipe is reportedly expensive early in Challengers World, so leave it off the list temporarily in that situation only

• Recipes 2: The various “Boost Potion” recipes—there are many of these to register

• Recipes 3: The 5 types that appear when you search for “케이프 제작”

Using bags and setting up these exclusions should make your inventory noticeably easier to manage.

Items Worth Selling at the Auction House During Inventory Cleanup

For new players who would rather not check every item individually at the Auction House, here are some common items worth knowing about.

• Juniper Berry Seed Oil: A material for Wealth Acquisition Potions / Currently around 5 million mesos in Luna—even if you do not gather herbs, you may obtain it from a Root Abyss herb pouch / The seeds also sell for around 700,000 mesos

• Grand Spell Essence: A material for 마법의 숫돌 / Currently around 90,000 mesos in Luna

• Twisted Time Essence: A material for 마법의 숫돌 / Currently around 50,000 mesos in Challengers World, and more than twice as expensive early on

• Magic Powder (Black): A material for Level 10 potions / Currently around 1 million mesos in Luna / Has a low chance of being obtained through crafting

• Strength/Dexterity/Intelligence/Luck Potion X Recipes: Currently around 1 million–7 million mesos in Luna

• Advanced Strength/Dexterity/Intelligence/Luck Potion X Recipes: Currently priced from several million to around 20 million mesos in Luna

• Wealth Acquisition Potion Recipe: Currently around 6 million mesos in Luna

• Confusion Fragment: A material for Dominator Pendants / Currently around 17 million mesos in Luna / Around twice that price or more in Challengers World

• Primal Essence is very expensive early in Challengers World

• Use Root Abyss/Cygnus fragments to make equipment, then extract it

Storage Precautions 

Finally, an item with an expiration date, like the one shown here, will remain in storage if it expires while stored there. More players than you might expect use this to preserve items as keepsakes.

If you do this, be careful with the relatively recent Retrieve All button. It also retrieves expired items like the one shown above, which then disappear as soon as they enter your inventory, and quite a few players have lost their keepsakes this way. Take particular care if you are attached to the items you have stored.
