This topic is inventory cleanup, and the aim is to go over points that are useful to keep in mind when organizing your inventory in-game.

MapleStory has quite a few systems and details tied to this, so if you are looking at it for the first time, it can feel confusing. With that in mind, I have gathered together the related points that beginners would do well to review once from start to finish, beginning with the basics and then moving through the rest in order.

About inventory slot expansion

When you create a character in MapleStory, you start with 48 slots by default. The maximum for Equipment/Use/Setup/Etc./Category is 128, while only the Cash category has a maximum of 256 and also starts at 256 slots by default.

Inventory Slot Expansion Coupons can technically be purchased from the Cash Shop, but in practical terms, it is fair to say that almost nobody buys them there anymore.

First, from a beginner's perspective, if you start during the winter or summer season, one of the earliest rewards from the growth support item event is a Select Slot Max Expansion Coupon. Since you receive 4 of them, you can expand all 4 categories to 128 slots. Once you use these on your main character, the immediate inventory pressure is largely resolved, so you can handle your other characters more gradually.

For secondary characters, you can receive the same benefit by creating a Tera Burning character in Challengers World,

and on a recurring basis, the same item is also available from Daily Gift as the rewards for days 6/16/20/22, so that is another source. That said, if you are a beginner, Character Slot Expansion Coupons will naturally matter more than expanding the inventory of secondary characters, so it is best to claim these with your priorities in mind.

Also, more recently, Max Expansion Coupons have continued to be handed out in sets of 4 through the showcase gifts held each summer and winter, so these are also quite helpful when building secondary characters. Since showcase gifts can be claimed separately on each character, it is a good idea to expand whichever categories you need first.

Sort, pin, and lock functions available in the inventory

At the top of the inventory, you can use the sort, pin, and lock functions. Each one does exactly what its name suggests.

When pin is applied, a vertical marker appears at the bottom of the icon, and when lock is applied, a padlock icon is shown. These are useful depending on your needs. Locking in particular is a good safety measure for expensive items, currently equipped items, and similar cases.

[Bags]: essential items for keeping your inventory organized

Bag items that can be used in the Use, Etc., and Setup inventories are effectively essential for inventory organization, so it is best to prepare them by type. You can view them all together in a UI like the one above either by clicking a bag directly in your inventory or by selecting Bags from the menu.

Since these are generally obtained through crafting, they can be bought through Maple Auction (Auction House), and they are also sold in event coin shops.

As of the time of writing, in regular worlds, the cheapest coin bag is around 1 million mesos, most of the others range from several million to 10 million mesos, and the more expensive coin bags and recipe bags can be bought for around 30 million mesos. From a beginner's perspective, and considering the value of event coins, spending coins on these is not a high priority.

The 80-slot Chair and Title bags cannot be bought in the Auction House and are only available through the event shop selection coupon shown above, but these are not urgent either, so they can be purchased later.

For the Soul Bag, 40 slots is the largest size.

Previously, Soul Shards were also stored in the inventory and Soul Bag, but after the Soul Collector was revamped, Soul Shards were moved to that UI, so now only completed Souls can be stored. In other words, the bag is less functional than before, but since it is inexpensive and is something you will eventually use, it is still worth buying from the Auction House in advance.

The Scroll Bag is also capped at 40 slots. This too can be bought in the Auction House for around 10 million mesos, so there is no need to spend event coins on it. It can hold all types of scroll items as well as Flame of Rebirth-type items.

The Recipe Bag is also largest at 40 slots. It can store all types of recipes, and without one, your Use inventory can very easily become cluttered with recipes, so if you were ranking bag priority, this one would be relatively high.

For the Herb and Mineral Bags, 20 slots is the largest size. As the names suggest, they store herb and mineral items. At present, though, unless you personally mine and gather in Ardentmill, their usefulness is not especially high. The items shown above are ones I had collected in the past when field gathering still existed. If you do mine and gather, however, these are absolutely essential.

The Crafting Bag is also largest at 20 slots. It stores the various materials used in crafting, including Eternal Flames, which are materials for Flames of Rebirth, and item crystals. Since these naturally accumulate as you play, having the bag ready helps keep things tidy.

The Coin Bag is also largest at 20 slots. It stores various coin items. At present there are not many different coin types, but it is still clearly useful to have one.

Chair and Title Bags are the only bags that go up to 80 slots, and these can only be obtained from the event coin shop. Since both chairs and titles continue to accumulate through events, these are bags you will likely need eventually even if not right away, but for beginners they are not a priority, so you can use the 40-slot versions for now and replace them later.

If it feels excessively cluttered right away, then for chairs, everything except custom chairs can be moved within the same world, so you can also send them to another character through storage.

Item extraction and Superior Item Crystals

When your Equipment inventory fills up with gear, you can simply sell it, but you can also extract it and sell the Superior Item Crystals you receive instead.

Superior Item Crystals are used as a material for the buff item Philosopher's Stone, so while the exact price varies by world, they currently sell for around 250,000 to 400,000 mesos each. The amount you get depends on item level, but when your Equipment inventory is nearly full, it is usually around 80 to 100 crystals.

Item extraction can be done either through the Extract/Fuse menu in your inventory if your Alchemy level is 6 or higher, or by using an extractor installed by another player in Channel 1 Ardentmill.

When doing this, it is essential to check the filter first and set it properly before proceeding with extraction.

Pet skill to avoid picking up specific applicable items

The Cash Shop skill that prevents your pet from picking up specific items is also fairly important for inventory cleanup. It can even be bought using only Mileage, and purchasing just one lets you apply it to all 3 pets, so this is something I would recommend getting.

Once the skill is applied, you can use the function through the Excluded Pickup Items Settings button below in the pet options.

You get space to enter 30 excluded item names per pet, for a total of 90, and most items can be registered. You will probably never use it, but there is even an option to exclude mesos from pickup.

If you register item names here, your pet will not pick those items up at all, so unless you manually pick them up yourself, they will never enter your inventory. In practice, this makes things much more comfortable.

These 3 become much less necessary as your character progresses, but they are long-standing examples that used to be almost mandatory to register back when there were far fewer bosses than there are now, or more recently, before the 12 weekly boss limit was introduced. Beyond these, there are still items that remain relevant today, so I will list a few representative examples below for reference, and you can register them according to your own preference.

For equipment items, as mentioned above, extraction is an option, so you should take that into account before deciding whether to register them.

Also, when entering item names, the system works like the Auction House in that even a partial name will bring up matching items, so you can use that to make the process easier.

ex) Scary Queen: even entering only “cary” will bring it up in the list

• Scary Queen/Together with Von Bon/Strange Rock Chair/Joyful Pierre/Papulatus Clock Chair: boss chairs that drop repeatedly

• Crystal Ventus Badge: equipment item that cannot be extracted

• Hilla's Pet Training Book: Dark Soul edition/[Pet Box]Dark Soul/Dark Soul Magic Stone/Dark Soul Enhancement Gem: Hilla reward items

• Cygnus Circlet/Crafting Recipe for Cygnus Koh-i-Noor: Cygnus reward items

• Dark Tachion: Papulatus reward item

• Crafting Recipe for Dominator Pendant/Twisted Time Fragment: if registering these, be careful not to accidentally register the actual Dominator Pendant itself

• Crafting Recipe for Honghwa Cheongmaedo

• Lucky Item recipes: enter only part of the name, such as “Lucky I,” and register all of the matching ones

• Recipes: in the case of Deimos Sage Shield, it is said to be expensive at the start of Challengers World, so only in that case should you leave it out temporarily

• Recipes 2: the many “Potion of Enhancement” recipes; there are a great many of them

• Recipes 3: the 5 types that appear when you search for “Cape Crafting”

Along with using bags, simply setting up these exclusions should already make inventory management noticeably more comfortable.

Items that are good to sell in the Auction House when organizing your inventory

For beginners, these are representative items worth remembering when you do not want to check every single item individually in the Auction House.

• Juniper Berry Seed Oil: ingredient for Wealth Acquisition Potion / currently about 5 million mesos in Luna - even if you do not gather, it may come from a Root Abyss herb pouch / the seed itself is also about 700,000 mesos

• Superior Spell Essence: material for Philosopher's Stone / currently about 90,000 mesos in Luna

• Distorted Essence of Time: material for Philosopher's Stone / currently about 50,000 mesos in Challengers World, and more than double that early on

• Magic Powder (Black): material for level 10 potions / currently about 1 million mesos in Luna / obtained at a low probability during crafting

• Crafting Recipe for 10-Stage STR/DEX/INT/LUK Potions: currently about 1 million to 7 million mesos in Luna

• Crafting Recipe for Enhanced 10-Stage STR/DEX/INT/LUK Potions: currently about several million to 20 million mesos in Luna

• Crafting Recipe for Wealth Acquisition Potion: currently about 6 million mesos in Luna

• Chaos Fragment: material for Dominator Pendant / currently about 17 million mesos in Luna / around 2 times or more in Challengers World

• Primal Essence is very expensive in the early stages of Challengers World

• For Root Abyss/Cygnus pieces, craft them first and then extract them

Storage-related precautions 

Lastly, more people than you might expect keep commemorative items in storage by taking advantage of the fact that when an item with an expiration date like this is placed in storage and then expires, it becomes stuck there permanently.

In that situation, the main thing to watch out for is the relatively recent Find All button. If you press it, the item shown above will also be marked as found, and the moment it enters your inventory, it disappears, so this has caused quite a few major accidents. If you are attached to items like these, be especially careful.
